Nothing beats natural lighting when it comes to taking photographs, but can the same sun take away your inherent shine? It can. And it’s not just season-dependent. Whether it’s summer or winter, you may need to apply sunscreen abundantly to save yourself from a multitude of health effects.

So why should you wear sunscreen?

Let me take you back to your fifth grade science class. Remember how you got scared (and maybe a little worried) when you learnt about the ozone layer and the monstrous UV rays that, like some evil spaceship’s laser beams are aimed at earth to create havoc. Well, it may not be as dramatic, but it’s a lesson that shouldn’t be forgotten. If the UV rays penetrate your skin, you can actually suffer from skin disorders. So, to avoid that apply sunscreen for a protective shield.

You can prevent skin cancer by using sunscreen. We have a habit of using sunscreen only when it is sunny. However, we should make it a habit to wear sunscreen even when it is cloudy or rainy so as to avoid skin cancer, which takes the form of melanoma.

So what should you look for your in your sunscreen when you are buying one?

Your sunscreen should ideally cover both ranges of the spectrum, that is, protection against UVA and UVB rays. It should also be at least of SPF 30. And because you might sweat in summer or get drenched in rainy season, it’s ideal to have a sunscreen that is water-resistant. This will make sure that you’re protected against skin cancer, sunburn and early aging.

 

Then comes the question, that whether one should wear sunscreen even when they are indoors?

Most of us spend our entire day in our workplace, which may lead us to think that we don’t need sunscreen. But unfortunately, our glass windows can’t really protect us against those evil UVA rays.  Also, you may end up going out – maybe to take a walk during lunch break, or to run some errand. What you may not realize that even if you are spending short periods of time outside, they all add up to make a massive impact. So stay safe and wear a sunscreen throughout the day.

A quick pro tip is to use a sunscreen that has a safe SPF value. It’s not necessary that a higher SPF is going to be more efficient than a lower one. If you are confused about what SPF to go for, you can always consult a dermatologist to guide you.

Darker skin actually is more protected than the fairer skinned ones because they have more of the pigment called melanin that provides some protection against the rays, and thus avoid skin cancer. But no matter what your complexion is, it is highly advised to use a sunscreen for protection from all angles.

If your skin is prone to allergy or has acne, avoid sunscreens that have preservatives or fragrances and make a more natural choice.

If you’re looking for substitutes for chemical based sunscreens, then there are many to choose from when it comes to natural products.

Coconut oil protects the skin from harmful rays.  To make it stronger and more effective, you may also use it with shea butter. The best part is that you need to use no harmful preservatives. Just store it in a cool place.

If you want to stay in the sun for longer without getting burnt, another way to do that is to apply sesame oil. It blocks 30% of the sun.

Almond Oil has SPF 15 that can easily provide protection from getting tanned.  The mono-saturated fats lie on your skin like a protective layer letting you be stress-free about getting tanned.

We believe that nothing works better than natural ingredients because it’s the most organic way of living possible. Maybe it’s time you try some of that yourself!
